All aircraft intending landing on Thaba Tholo are required to request and receive permission to land.
The Thaba Tholo airstrip is located on the northern boundary of the reserve. The strip is registered with some conditions (see below). During the auction, we provide a shuttle service from the airstrip to the auction location.
We also man the frequency 124.8. Call at 15 miles and we will make sure that the airstrip is clear
Before the auction each year we prepare the area next to the auction facility for helicopters (S 24°28.774’E 027°15.201’). A number of helicopter landing sites are selected and white markings are painted onto the grass. It is best to approach from the south of Amsterdam, keeping well clear of the auction pens. We have a dedicated team waiting for the arrival of helicopters and they will collect the pilot and passengers soon after you have landed.
Flyovers cause extreme stress for the animals in auction bomas.
Please also avoid flying over the auction area in to reduce noise pollution.
If you remain to the east of the road next to the helicopter landing area, you are safe and won't interfere with operations.
